Multi-award winning STIR magazine, the only art magazine made for prisoners by prisoners in Scotland, has been celebrated in a new installation within HMP Shotts.
The 24 front covers of every issue produced to date, one of which won a platinum award at this years Koeslter Awards, are now framed and displayed outside the prison’s learning centre.
STIR magazine aims to champion the artistic talents of people in prison and is the longest running creative arts project in SPS history, having been established in 2011.
Supported by Fife College Art and Design Lecturer Inigo Garrido Rey, a group of six long-term prisoners use high-quality graphic design to produce two issues per year. For each issue, a theme is identified and individuals in custody across all 15 SPS prisons are invited to contribute content, whether this be visual artwork, poems, or prose.
Andy Wilson, Head of Offender Outcomes at HMP Shotts said “We were delighted to work with the Fife College Education Team in producing this amazing installation celebrating the fantastic STIR Magazine. It has enhanced the space immensely and acts as a great conversation piece and inspiration as people enter the Learning Centre. Thank you to the Occupational Workshop for making the frames and the Shotts estates team for carefully installing each one."
