INDIVIDUALS in custody at HMP Inverness have recently completed a project to make the establishment’s visit room and waiting area a more pleasant and inviting environment, especially for children coming to visit loved ones.

Over an 8 week period, they created a shape mural in the waiting area, which now displays art work created by those working towards Nat 3 and Nat 5 Art qualifications in the prisons learning centre. The idea is that the displays can be changed every few months as a way of showcasing more of the artwork that is produced.

The character ‘Hamish the Haggis’ was first created for a children’s story produced by individuals in custody at Inverness, a number of years ago. He has continued to feature in various resources for families so it made sense for him to be included in the mural too.

Children visiting loved ones are now able to ‘find’ and ‘follow’ Hamish as they complete new activity packs during family visits. The pack also contains a drawing/colouring activity and once complete, their masterpiece can be displayed in the central frame for all to see.

Mark Holloway, Acting Governor at HMP Inverness said “This was a fantastic collaboration between Fife College, FCO Chrissy Catlin and those in our care. Well done to everyone involved.”
