The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scotland’s national broadcasting orchestra perform all over the world but for the first time ever, they have held a concert in one of Scotland’s prisons.

HMP Low Moss hosted the Orchestra last month, with 55 people in our care, as well as staff,  able to attend and  enjoy the full orchestra play a range of classical and contemporary music.

Each piece of music that was played was introduced and the style and background explained, giving an insight to genres most had never experienced before.  One of the attendees said: “The music was amazing, and it was so unusual compared to anything else I have attended in prison”.

Orchestra playing to audience

This concert was a follow on from three family music sessions that the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra  delivered within the establishment’s Visitor’s Centre at the end of last year. Using songs, rhymes and stories across the themes of ‘Under the sea’, ‘On the farm’ and ‘In to space’, the music sessions offered a unique way for families to spend time together and create meaningful memories.

After the performance, the musicians spent time interacting with the audience, giving them an opportunity to ask questions about their role in the orchestra and the instrument they play.

The concert was a great success and has even generated some new classical music fans with one attendee saying “I really enjoyed a different experience. I have learned that I actually really enjoy classical music!”
