Prisoners at HMP Barlinnie are playing their part in the mission to help thousands of people living in third-world countries to see.

In the last 10 years, individuals in our care have helped South Lanarkshire based Optician Dr Scott Mackie, deliver an astonishing 30,000 glasses to people in India, Cambodia, and parts of Africa.

Dr Mackie is one of many volunteers who travel across the world to take part in 'Right to Sight' eye camps, delivering eye screening clinics and providing glasses to those who do not have access to healthcare.

In the months running up to each trip, Dr Mackie drops off glasses, donated by the public, so that they can be measured and sorted by individuals within Barlinnie.

Dr Mackie, along with his wife, and fellow optician, Dr Roisin Mackie, are heading to India later this month for their next camp.

He said: “I want to thank the individuals in HMP Barlinnie for their support over the years. They play a fundamental part in the Right to Sight project and their input helps society become a better place.”

Governor in Charge at HMP Barlinnie Michael Stoney said: “We are delighted that those in our care can contribute to this life-changing humanitarian programme and hope this partnership can continue for many years to come.”
