THE way recovery sessions at HMP Low Moss have “transformed” lives has been captured in a piece on STV News.
Cameras came into the establishment to see a peer mentor group in action as part of the launch of the new Alcohol and Drug Recovery Strategy. The strategy looks to build on good work done across the prison estate, including at HMP Low Moss.
The STV online article can be found here, which also contains a clip of the piece which appeared on the evening news.
Ian, one of those featured, said: "I'm 56 years old. I'm in the best place I have been in my lifetime - and it's all down to this room. The difference is has made to me as a person is night and day."
Peter, who was also interviewed, said: "It has totally transformed my behaviour in prison. Since moving here I've had a complete attitude shift - toward staff, other prisoners, everything,”
The strategy recognises the two challenges of both tackling supply into establishments, while also reducing demand by supporting people in their recovery.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “We are determined to do everything we can, working with partners, to reduce the supply of substances, support people in their recovery journey, and create better environments for everyone to live and work.
“This is at the heart of our new strategy, which outlines how we aim to further support those in our care to better health and reduce the harm that substance use can cause to individuals, their families, and those around them.”
The strategy document can be viewed on our Publications page.
