A group of 12 prison staff recently completed a heroic cycling challenge in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support and Erskine Veterans Charity.
The idea of Physical Education Instructors Gary Lumsden and Gary Robertson from HMP Low Moss, the challenge saw the group cycle to all 17 establishments in the Scottish Prison Service Estate non-stop; equating to a monumental 586 miles!
On 16 June, the group began their cycle from Scotland’s northernmost prison, HMP Inverness, cycling the 109 miles to HMP Grampian. To show their support, staff and those in our care at Inverness cycled the same distance on static bikes within the prison gymnasium. They also generously donated £500 from the Common Good Fund to be added to the overall total!
With four support drivers, and a host of colleagues, family and friends joining for parts of the route along the way, the cyclists visited every establishment in the country, finishing at HMP Low Moss some 45 hours later!
The ‘Tour de Prisons’ challenge raised an incredible of £6,300 which has been split between the two charities.
Additionally, with the ongoing UCI World Cycling event in Scotland this month, individuals in our care and staff at HMP Low Moss wanted to get involved. 27 people in custody and 12 staff members completed 786.62 miles on static bikes over a period of 5 and ½ hours. The target was to complete the same number of miles achieved during the Tour de Prisons” challenge with all showing great determination and effort.
