HMP Edinburgh welcomed families of those in our care to enjoy a range of activities as part of their annual ‘Family Week’.

Over the course of three days, Barnardos staff and volunteers were on hand to provide information and support to those with a loved one in custody.  SPS staff also spoke to families about the range of support and opportunities that are available for those in prison including addictions, case management, education and chaplaincy.

There were also special visits from Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service giving the children the opportunity to find out about the important jobs they do and have a play in their vehicles!

Benji the bus provided the base for sensory play, crafts and storytime, led by the staff from PlayTalkRead. While Officer Alan brought the newborn chicks from the prison's ‘Henitentiary’ for the children to see and hold.

Over 20 families attended the prisons ‘Play, Learn, Connect’ sessions, which are run in partnership with Early Years Scotland every week. This week these included a special highland games theme where families were able to play together and enjoy some healthy competition!

To add to the occasion, Officer Stewart played the bagpipes and the Catering Officers provided a feast of burgers, hotdogs (complete with toppings!) and lots of fresh fruit.
This was a huge collaborative effort between SPS, Barnardos and a wide range of partners and we are grateful to everyone for making it such a success!
