The Bella and Lilias Centres have been recognised at the 2024 European Prison Achievement Awards.

The annual event celebrates innovation and excellence in prison systems across Europe. It is organised by Europris, a non-political, non-governmental body who bring together practitioners in the prisons arena to exchange best practice and promote ethical and rights based imprisonment.

Shortlisted from over 30 entries, our Community Custody Units placed second in the vote at the awards in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The CCUs are the first of their kind in the UK. With a focus on ‘custody in the community’, we re-designed our custodial environment with the aim of creating gender specific and trauma-informed settings with facilities designed to help better prepare women for release.
