Primary schools, care homes and supported housing across Perth & Kinross and Fife, have been supported by HMP Perth's ‘Good Neighbour’ initiative this year.

Throughout 2024, the establishment's woodwork shed has produced new benches, planters, mud kitchens and picnic tables, as a way of giving back to the local community.

The latest delivery was to Our Lady's Primary School in Perth, whose playground had been blighted by vandalism in recent months. Staff from the prison were delighted to hand over the new benches and planters in time for Christmas.

After being contacted by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, they also crafted a new a commemorative bench which now sits proudly in Perth Fire Station's Memorial Garden.

For the individuals in custody, the benefits of being involved go far beyond learning woodworking skills. It promotes a sense of citizenship, builds confidence and instils pride in knowing they have helped their communities; all things we hope support them to make positive changes to their lives.
