‘Unlocking Future Connections’ is a collaborative and innovative new programme established between Amey and the HMP Highland project team, which has recently been piloted at HMP Inverness.

The programme seeks to bring together people in custody with employers and break down barriers for those looking for work after prison.

It stemmed from the focus of the HMP Highland project, creating a community legacy, by helping those from the local area to break the cycle of reoffending through employment.

Phase one of the programme kicked off in January, when 24 men in custody spent the day with representatives from Amey, and partners from their supply chain, Speedy Hire, and Hatton Traffic Management Ltd.

A large focus of the event was hearing from those in custody about the barriers they’ve faced to employment in the past, with the organisations keen to share what they have to offer.

A guest speaker, Daniel, kindly shared his experience of employment with Hatton Traffic Management after spending time in prison, which was invaluable to those thinking about their next steps.

He showed the men the basics of traffic management, as temporary roadworks were set up in HMP Inverness’s exercise yard!

Feedback from the event was extremely positive, with one attendee saying: “I really liked that this is helping to give me opportunities for my future. It’s a bonus that training is provided, and my qualifications don’t matter.”

Phase two of the project is currently under development, with the intention that training and qualifications will be provided for those who are interested in working with Amey and their partners.
